90029 To Have a
Friend: An Exchange of Letters on Rhododendrons, Iris,
Lilies, War and Peace 1945-51, Del and Ray James Northwest Rhododendron
Pioners and C.P. Raffill, M.B.E., V.M.H. Compiled and edited by
Frances Scharen Burns. 2001. The correspndence between Del and Ray James
of Eugene, OR, two founders of the American Rhododendron Society, and
C.P. Raffill of Surrey, England, is pure reading pleasure. At its core
is the knowledge and curiosity of three hortitculturists, two amateurs
and one professional, exchanging seeds, bulbs, plants and letters across
the Atlantic. The letters are set against the dramatic historical
context of a world war aftermath, and Raffitt’s personal account of the
deprivations accepted by the English to restore Britain is riveting. The
book is also interesting for its portrayal of the early years of
rhododendron collecting on the West Coast. 539 pp, softcover $35.00.
