SPRING 2008

10691 Rhododendron ‘Queen Alice’ — (degronianum ssp. yakushimanum x ‘Alice’) 4', -5°F, M, 4/4. Nice big cherry red buds break into bright pink trusses that cover the rhododendron. It is quite hardy with attractive new growth. This is a spectacular hybrid which forms an exquisite plant you will enjoy all year. 6-10", 10-15", 15-21"

10849 Rhododendron ‘Queen Anne’s’ — ([brachycarpum x catawbiense]) x unnamed white fortunei ssp. fortunei hybrid) 5', 0°F, EM, 4-5/3-4. The flowers are like billows of fluffy clouds, glistening white and fully double. In the world of rhododendrons double flowers are rare, so this plant is both unusual and extremely beautiful. The flower first opens with a touch of lavender and ages to pure white. The foliage is slightly glossy and densely covers a rounded plant. An excellent addition to any garden. 10-15"

10697 Rhododendron ‘Rainbow’ — (a lost hybrid named ‘Anthony Waterer’ x griffithianum) 6', 0°F, M, 4/3. ‘Rainbow’s’ tall upright appearance is a result of its thick, vertically directed, narrow angle branches. Irresistible flowers are edged in deep pink with white centers. 30-36", 36-48"

10545 Rhododendron ‘Ramapo’ — (fastigiatum x carolinianum) 2', -20°F, EM, 3/4. Plentiful pale violet flowers dance amid this bushy blue-green mat of leaves. At Greer Gardens we have all become fond of ‘Ramapo’ for its pleasing foliage color changes throughout the year, especially favored are the dusty blue new leaves following a shot of growth. This hardy dwarf can be grown in sun or partial shade, although in full sun it will maintain a more compact form. It is well suited for use in a low border or rock garden. Outstanding! 3-6", 6-10", 15-21"

11194 Rhododendron ‘Razorbill’ — 2-3', 5°F, EM, -/-. (spinuliferum seedling) This hybrid has conical trusses of tubular flowers to contrast its dark green hairy foliage. The erect flowers are what I would call baby girl pink, with some accents one shade darker. A small green calyx, covered in hairs, is visible in these loose trusses. The perfect gift for the parents of baby girls. 10-15"

10229 Rhododendron ‘Red Delicious’ — (‘Jean de Marie Montague’ x ‘Leo’) 5', -5°F, ML-L, 4/4. Bright, shining, fire red flowers! 10587 Rhododendron ‘Red Eye’ — (‘Anah Kruschke’ x ‘Purple Splendour’) 5', -10°F, ML, 4/4. Here’s a plant that stands sun, buds young, branches readily and does not mind heavy cutting for propagation! It’s the kind of plant you can depend on year after year. The flowers are deep red-purple with a most interesting eye. When the flower first opens, the eye is green gold and little by little it becomes red. It is an interesting contrast with the purple! While some may think ‘Red Eye’ is a misnomer because the "eye" isn’t always red, it is the name that was attached and has stayed with the plant. 6-10"

10004 Rhododendron ‘Red Gold’ —(‘Ring of Fire’ x ‘Lem’s Cameo’) 5', 5°F, ML, 5/4. Just wait until you see the fine foliage on this exciting hybrid, but what else could you expect but the best of leaves, when you consider that two of the finest foliage plants are its parents. The medium sized foliage carries a coating of that beautiful wool rhododendron growers call indumentum which makes for such exquisite plant appearance. Then let’s talk about flowers; again its parents are each considered special for their spring blossoms, and this resulting plant is also lovely. At first the buds open rich red gradually changing to a soft showy pink. It flowers heavily, and a well grown plant expresses beauty beyond belief. The parentage of this has been published as (‘Sefton’ x degronianum ssp. yakushimanum) which is incorrect. HARDY, AND NICE! 6-10", 10-15"

NEW 11218 Rhododendron ‘Something Lovely’ — (Lori Eichelser Hybrid ) 2', -5°F, E-EM, -/-. Ohh cranberry! Buds appear to be clusters of small cranberries as the trusses unfold. As the flowers open the outside surface fades slightly and the inside color of orchid pink contrasts beautifully on these frilly flowers. The small 3'' long foliage is a deep muted green and densely covers the plant. 10-15"

10183 Rhododendron ‘Sonata’ — (‘Purple Splendour’ x dichroanthum) 3', 0°F, L, 3-4/3-4. In the music world a sonata is a performance with solo instrument. Our ‘Sonata’ with tubular shaped, orange-red flowers edged in red will add its own music to your garden. The mass of slender, dark green leaves do well in a sunny spot. 15-21"

10507 Rhododendron ‘Sonatine’ — (‘Mars’ x degronianum ssp. yakushimanum ‘Koichiro Wada’) 2½', -10°F, ML, 4/4. Flowers open red and then change to a nice rose-pink color with a lighter center. The dorsal lobes are marked with strong yellowish-green. Indumentum on the foliage is another plus for a very pretty plant. 6-10"

10536 Rhododendron ‘Songbird’ — (russatum x ‘Blue Tit’) 3', -5oF or hardier, E-EM, 3-4/4. There are many small "blue" rhododendrons, sometimes so many it is hard to separate them all. However, this one will stand out for its bright purple-blue flowers which seem to glow as if by some mystical power. The foliage is glossy green and makes a superb compact plant. 6-10", 10-15"

10506 Rhododendron ‘Sparkling Burgundy’ — (‘Purple Splendour’ x macrophyllum ‘Seven Devils’) 5', 10°F, M, 3/3. Two inch wide funnel shaped flowers with a soft lilac throat and a touch of white. 10659 Rhododendron ‘Springfield’ — (‘Umpqua Chief’ x ‘Fawn’) 5', 5°F, L, 4/3. For those of you who go bananas over those subtle orange shades, this one is for you. The salmon-orange color is not duplicated by any other rhododendron. It was featured in the winter 1979 issue of the American Rhododendron Society bulletin. The color is great, but it is really hard to capture its beauty on the printed page. Long, narrow fir green leaves clothe this upright plant. Worth reserving a place for in your garden. 15-21"

It has lavender-pink flowers with a wine colored blotch and will grow as wide as it does tall. Small, dark, glossy green leaves give good contrast. A very special little plant that you will enjoy. 6-10", 10-15", 15-21"

10828 Rhododendron ‘Starburst’ — (‘Moser’s Maroon’ x ‘Purple Splendour’) 6', 5°F, L, 4/2-3. Bright red purple flowers accented by a golden blotch on the upper petal make this a showy flower. Then to make it even more of a show stopper, the blotch and center of the flowers are surrounded in white. It’s late flowering, extending your blooming season, and it has interesting wavy foliage. Sometimes mistakenly sold as ‘Dark Star’. 10-15", 30-36", 36-48"

Rhododendron ‘Starry Night’ — See ‘Gletschernacht’.

11150 Rhododendron ‘Strawberry Chiffon’ — (Vulcan x [Mars x degronianum ssp yakushimanum]) 4', -15°F, M-ML, 4/4. 10919 Rhododendron ‘Summer Snow’ — (maximum x [{ungernii x auriculatum} x F2]) 5', -15°F, VL, 3-4/3. Large white flowers with rays of greenish yellow shoot up from this most vigorous plant with large leaves. Put this in the background because it will grow tall. Outstanding because it is so late flowering, extending the season into summer. An excellent hybrid from David G. Leach. 10-15"

Imagine a rhododendron with flowers even more yellow and larger than those of ‘Crest’, with better foliage, better habit, and you have ‘Sunspray’. The voluptuous trusses are such a pure and true yellow that they would put a lemon to shame. Lovely wide leaves 6" long fully clothe the branches. 10-15"

11036 Rhododendron ‘Super Dog’ — (‘Confusion’ x ‘Pink Walloper’) 5', 0°F, M-ML, -/-. Large trusses carry large open flowers washed a yellow cream with a ruffled, light pink edge. To add to the delightful color combination, the throat is densely covered in red spots! This beautiful flower sits above large dark green leaves, very similar to its parent ‘Pink Walloper.’ A fine hybrid from Dan Bones. 10-15"

10423 Rhododendron ‘Swamp Beauty’ — (‘Purple Splendour’ x ‘Loderi Superlative’) 5', 10°F, ML, 4/4. The first question asked is where did this name come from? Jim Elliott, who is known for his imaginative plant names, has a wet spot he calls the "swamp" in the back of his property. Along the edge of it he has some of his seedlings planted and over the years one plant became a beauty. You guessed it, this is ‘Swamp Beauty’! The flowers begin as large, magnolia purple buds which open to heavenly deep rose-pink with a maroon blotch. The blotch is solid in the throat, flaring to spots on the upper petal. Wow!! The foliage is medium fir green on a vigorous and well clothed plant. 10-15", 48-60"

10372 Rhododendron ‘Taku’ — (‘Tally Ho’ x degronianum ssp. yakushimanum) 4', -5°F, M-ML, 3-4/4-5. Any rhododendron with R. degronianum ssp. yakushimanum as a parent makes a good looking plant, and this is no exception. It has he-avy woolly indumentum which is snowy white on the new growth, turning to a light tan as it ages. The flowers are a deep coral pink in bud, opening to a lighter coral pink. A delightful plant. 6-10"

The leaves are deep glossy green and the underside of the foliage is covered with woolly fur called indumentum. The indumentum starts out white on the new foliage and eventually turns a delightful cinnamon brown. Large pink flowers with lighter pink centers cover the beautiful foliage each spring. 6-10", 10-15"

10967 Rhododendron ‘Tressa McMurry’ (occidentale x ponticum) 4', -10°F, M-ML, 3/4. This is an interesting plant that you will want to grow for its foliage. The leaves are long and narrow, a rich green and somewhat shiny. Actually, I question if it actually is the above cross, which would make it an azaleodendron, but more likely another form of ponticum ‘Cheiranthifolium’. Though the above parentage would say that occidentale was the seed parent, I doubt it was and in actuality ponticum was, and that seed grown from it resulted in another of the many narrow leaved forms of ponticum. Though possible, it would be difficult to cross occidentale on to ponticum and it is actually ponticum selfed with its own pollen. In any case it is an interesting plant with lots of pinkish purple flowers. You will want this plant in your garden. C

10999 Rhododendron ‘Trewithen Orange’ — (‘Full House’ x concatenans) 4', -5°F, M, 4-5/3-4. 10643 Rhododendron ‘Trude Webster’ — (‘Countess of Derby’ x ‘Countess of Derby’) 5', - 10°F, M, 5/4. We are justly proud of this variety which was the first plant to win the Superior Plant Award, the highest award possible for a rhododendron. To see a plant in full flower is such an awe inspiring sight that it will not soon be forgotten. The trusses are absolutely gigantic and the clear shade of pink is beyond description. The foliage is large, wide and slightly twisted making a perfect combination with the trusses. Plant habit is compact and upright. Excellence all around! 10-15", 15-21", 30-36"

10501 Rhododendron ‘Twilight Pink’ — ([fortunei ssp. fortunei x ‘Alice’] selfed x ‘Comstock’) 4', -5°F, M, 4/4. Named ‘Twilight Pink’ because the warm pink flower resembles the beautiful hues of pink and apricot at sunset. ‘Twilight Pink’ literally glows! The flower has a large calyx giving it a double appearance. The apple green leaves clothe the plant completely making it desirable year around. It grows as a compact, yet sturdy mound. 36-48"

11197 Rhododendron ‘Twilight Sun’ — ([‘Nancy Evans’ x{‘Whopper’ x ‘Brandt’s Tropicana’}]x ‘Whitney’s Pumpkin’) 4', 0°F, EM, 5/3-4. From the parentage you can tell this plant is going to be gorgeous in yellow and coral tones. These deep red buds will open to a buttery yellow inside and deep salmon outside. A long calyx is buttery yellow with deep salmon accents and coral red spots. Nectaries are deep red. Absolutely striking! 10-15"
