GALANTHUS

32481 Galanthus nivalis — (-40°F, USDA Zones 3-8) Snowdrops are one of the earliest blooming bulbs. They grow best in full sun to light shade and cool, moist soil. Once established they should be left alone. Apply bone meal in the spring just after flowering. A winter mulch is suggested. These fast spreading bulbs are planted 4 inches deep. Cont. $5.95 s

GERANIUM — (-30°F, USDA Zones 4-7) Geraniums generally need just ordinary, but well-drained soil. Most grow very well in full sun, except in hotter regions where you want to give them some protection from extremes. There you may want to place them in your garden where they will get some shade. Geraniums will rebloom if deadheaded.

31355 Geranium ‘Ann Folkard’ — (-20°F, USDA Zones 5-9) A clump-forming mound of yellow-green foliage supports magenta flowers with black eyes that twine through neighboring plants or gracefully over the edge of a path. Grows to 2’ easily in partial shade or full sun. Hardy! 1 Gallon $17.95

GEUM Geum requires sharp drainage, especially in the winter time. Give good fertile soil and shade from full sun in the hotter parts of its range. Divide every three to four years.

31183 Geum chiloense ‘Lady Stratheden’ — (-20°F, USDA Zones 5-9) Through the summer, semi-double, bright yellow flowers bloom atop arching branches on this clumping perennial. Lobed, 8" medium green leaves on a plant that will reach up to 2' in height and width. 1 Gallon $10.95

GUNNERAGunnera are classically considered heavy feeders. They need deep, fertile, moist soils. In regions with cold winters, protect the crowns with a heavy mulch of their own leaves and other organic matter. These plants may be hardier than they are rated.

30098 Gunnera chilensis (20°F, USDA Zones 9-10) Syn. G. tinctoria, G. scabra. This is a big, bold awesome plant to 8' high with giant leaves 4-8' across. Spine like hairs appear on leaf stalks, and the ribs are red. Given space (they need plenty) and necessary care, they can be the ultimate in summertime conversation pieces. HELLEBORUS — Although hellebores are drought tolerant after they get established, they do prefer some shade and deep, rich, neutral or alkaline soils. The roots resent disturbance after they mature.

30016 Helleborus argutifolius - Corsican Hellebore — (-10°F, USDA Zones 6-9) The evergreen foliage is blue-green, distinctly toothed along the margins. The bushy clumps stretching 1-2' in height bring forth sweet, green cup-shaped flowers in the second year. More sun tolerant than other hellebores. 1 Gallon $15.95

30501 Helleborus argutifolius ‘Janet Starnes’ — A wonderful and a fitting tribute to an admired nursery woman. This fine plant began as a seedling of her stock and was named in her honor. Helleborus x hybridus — (-20°F, USDA Zones 5-9) Hellebores grouped as x hybridus are hybrids of H. orientalis and other species. These are flowering size divisions or seedlings grown from first quality parents, including some from nurseries in England and Germany. For a show with beautiful color variation, plant some of each.

Helleborus niger - Christmas Rose — (-30°F, USDA Zones 4-8) This perennial has leathery, evergreen leaves which are dark green and have 7-9 lobes. The large flowers, produced early winter through spring, are white flushed with rose and have golden anthers. As flowers mature, the colors deepen.

30854 Helleborus purpurascens — (-20°F, USDA Zones 5-8) Clump-forming plant with deciduous leaves up to 11" long are divided into 5 deeply cut leaflets. Purplish or slate gray flowers, often pink flushed with light green centers, appear before leaves, midwinter to mid spring. 1 Gallon $24.95

31311 Helleborus Royal Heritage strain — (-30°F, USDA Zones 4-9) ‘Royal Heritage’ is a collection of Hellebores by John Elsley of Wayside Gardens that are the result of years of breeding and collecting. The parents include H. x torquatus, H. x olympicus and H. x orientalis. The resulting group of plants has 2" flowers with a 4 month bloom time, from winter through spring. The range of colors for these plants is purple, red, white, yellow, green, pink, to almost black. 2 Gallon $24.95

30225 Helleborus x sternii — (-10°F, USDA Zones 6-9) This glorious plant, from the much desired cross of H. argutifolius and H. lividus, has shield-shaped leaves, smoky grayish blue netted with silver, on gorgeous red stems. Late winter brings blooms that are dusky pink-purple brushed with green. 2 Gallon $29.95

HEMEROCALLIS - DAYLILY — Daylilies will grow in full sun or partial shade. They perform best in sunny areas in temperate summer zones and benefit from filtered shade in hot climates. Select a site with moist well-drained humus-rich soil. Prepare soil to 1' depth, spread roots and allow tip of crown to be less than 1" below soil level. Space plants 12" apart if the miniature variety, 18-24" if a taller form. Water well and mulch; 6-8" winter mulch should be used in northern areas to protect roots. Dormant forms are fully hardy in USDA Zones 3-9. Evergreen types withstand temperatures below freezing, but a prolonged or hard freeze causes tops to die back.

Please soak the root 2 hours or overnight if the plant has become dry. The resilient roots store water and are drought tolerant, so they will recuperate nicely. Plants frequently require an extra growing season to get well established; however, you should see flowers the first year.

31550 Hemerocallis ‘Golden Dewdrop’ — (Taylor ’55) Golden yellow, 18" height, 3½" bloom, very early season, continual rebloom, semievergreen. HOSTAS — (-40°F, USDA Zones 3-9) Foliage is frequently very colorful and showy from early spring through summer. Thin spikes topped by trumpet-shaped flowers grow from the foliage in summer and may last for several weeks. Perfect for areas of deep shade, they outperform all but a few shade-loving plants. It is easy to see why hostas are gaining popularity and are much demanded. If you plant one in your garden, you will be sure to want more!

Hosta tokudama — Medium. This is the standard by which other blue-leaved hostas are measured. A vigorous grower with large blue, heavily puckered, nearly round, cup-shaped leaves. The flowers are pale lavender to white on 18'' stalks. Quite resistant to slugs.

IRIS — Since Irises are such a diverse group, we will only list general requirements here. It is best to plant them midsummer through early autumn. LEWISIA — Native to western North America, lewisia demand perfect drainage. Grow them in moderately fertile, humus-rich, neutral to acidic soils. Deciduous species need full sun, but you will want to plant evergreens in partial shade. Definitely protect all from winter moisture, and the deciduous ones from rain in the summer.

30020 Lewisia cotyledon — (-10°F, USDA Zones 6-8) The terrific candy stripe flowers on this evergreen perennial are most unusual. They generally have white edges with a pink stripe down the center. 32443 Lewisia cotyledon ‘Howellii’ — A fine selection of Lewisia, it’s traits will include soft pink blooms, many with the petal tips split. LIGULARIA — Ligularia do great with deep, rich, moist soils, even to the extreme of bog gardens. You can plant them in ordinary garden soil if they are not allowed to dry out. LIRIOPE - LILY TURF — Lily turf grow best in light, moderately fertile, neutral to acidic, moist, but well-drained soil. These plants will grow in sun or shade, but they will need shelter from cold, drying winds.

Liriope muscari — (-10°F, USDA Zones 6-10) This member of the lily family is often mistaken for a grass. The long, narrow leaves of bright green will make a delightful show in the garden. Excellent for borders or as a ground cover in sun or part shade. Plant clumps about 18" apart for good coverage. The arching grass like leaves can reach 2' long. Small flowers appear in clusters on spikes above the leaves like a grape hyacinth.
