CONIFERS Abies thru Cupressus
ABIES - FIR Abies Information: Usually very large, pyramidal, rough barked trees bearing upright cones which disintegrate after seeds ripen; undersides of needles usually silvery green to silvery blue. While abies can be easy to grow, we have found that they are not tolerant of extremely dry or extremely wet conditions. In containers they are especially difficult, particularly during warm weather. Planted in a well drained planting mix, they do well while the mix is new, but after a few months, as the organic matter in the mix breaks down, the mix becomes more dense and the same amount of water can kill the tree. Use a soil mixture that contains a high percentage of pumice or perlite which will not decompose. We are very careful to ship only trees with healthy live roots; however, only a short time in the wrong soil mixture as well as too much or too little water for more than an hour or two can kill a young tree. For these reasons that are beyond our control, we must modify our replacement policy to cover only the first three months, with authorized replacement at one-half price plus actual shipping cost. Abies alba - Silver Fir — (-30°F, USDA Zones 4-8) Slow growing, this stately evergreen can reach heights of 100' or more. Its needles are dark green above with two white bands on the underside. The Silver Fir can tolerate more shade than the typical fir but requires somewhat more moist soil. 60380 Abies alba ‘Pyramidalis’ — The attractive glossy green needles densely held on ascending branches form a tight columnar tree in youth. Growing 6-12" a year, it will eventually reach 20-30' and conical with age. 6-12" $32.95 Abies balsamea — (-40°F, USDA Zones 3-8) At lower elevations this fir can grow to 60-90', but in higher elevations, it will stay lower and more prostrate. It is generally stiff in habit and pyramidal in shape. With its lustrous dark green needles and dark purple cones (even when young), it is used mainly as a specimen tree.60179 60381 Abies chensiensis ‘Prostrata Glauca’ — (-10°F, USDA Zones 6-8) A rare find, this species is native to western China. Short, slightly upturned needles are greenish gray above and whitish green below. A moderate grower, this plant will grow 6-12" a year, trailing over the ground to form a dense, sun-loving carpet. 1-2' $29.95 Abies concolor - White Fir — (-30°F, USDA Zones 4-8) Needles are almost vertically arranged on the stems and are flattened and glaucous on both sides. Generally, this fir grows to 50' but can reach 100' or more. Conical in habit. 60772 Abies concolor ‘Archer’s Dwarf’ — MINIATURE. A nice new variety that has bluer, shorter needles than the norm. Some sources call its form globose and with age becoming more conical. 6-12" $39.95 60881 Abies koreana - Korean Fir — (-20°F, USDA Zones 5-8) Korean firs are desirable for their slow growing habit, early cone production and brilliant silver color underneath the leaves. This elegant conifer grows only to 30' tall. The most notable characteristic is the cones, which are a violet-purple to blue, standing upright on the branches. Does best in the cooler climates, although reported to be somewhat more heat tolerant than other firs. 1-2' $27.95 60862 Abies koreana ‘CIS’ — MINIATURE. This is a lovely compact form of Abies, globose in habit and very slow growing. Great for small gardens and collections. 6-12" $29.95, 1-2' $49.95 60250 Abies koreana ‘Horstmann’s Silberlocke’ — This pyramidal tree is an exceptional specimen on all counts: each needle is curled backwards to reveal its silvery undersides; an abundance of violet-purple cones are borne on the upper side of the branches. Slow to form a leading shoot, this semidwarf grows only 3-6" a year. While care should be taken to avoid planting in boggy soil conditions, the tree has proven to be both pest and disease free. 6-12" $29.95 60384 Abies koreana ‘Silber Mavers’ — DWARF. A selection with green needles, slightly contorted to reveal the silvery undersides. Slow growing, it forms the smallest of globes accented by plentiful, violet-purple cones. 6-12" $46.95 Abies lasiocarpa - Rocky Mountain or Alpine Fir — (-20°F, USDA Zones 5-8) Large, growing to 100' or more, this conifer has light grayish to chalk-white bark. The cones are unusual, drawing attention to the dark purple color. 60360 Abies lasiocarpa var arizonica ‘Compacta’ — DWARF. This superior form of lasiocarpa is very compact and very suitable for larger rock gardens. Silver-blue needles and light bark make a beautiful combination that is always attractive. One of the best. It was known for many years as Libocedrus decurrens and is native to the western U.S. In its native habitat, it grows generally as a pyramidally-shaped tree, though in its more Southern climes and in Europe it tends to be more columnar. It has flat needle leaves like Thuja. Good for tall hedges, windbreaks or borders. 1-2' $30.95, 2-3' $39.95, 3-4' $44.95 CEDRUS - TRUE CEDAR Cedrus atlantica - Atlas Cedar — (-10°F, USDA Zones 6-9) As it grows quickly when young, this form can be stiff and pyramidal with an open, gaunt look in youth. As the Atlas Cedar matures, its growth rate slows and it takes on a flat-topped habit with horizontally spreading branches--an extremely picturesque and interesting tree. Its needles cast a bluish green color, varying from light green to almost a silvery blue. Grows 40-60' high by 30-40' wide, but can eventually attain 120' in height by 90-100' wide. Difficult to transplant and should be moved as a container or a ball and burlapped plant only. Prefers well drained, moist, deep, loamy soil but will tolerate sandy or clay soils if there is no standing water. Prefers acid soils, although withstands some alkalinity. Shelter from strong winds. 60009 Cedrus atlantica -‘Aurea’ — The new needles of ‘Aurea’ glow golden yellow the first year and become green in the second year. The habit becomes more informal with gracefully hanging lower branches as it matures. A very stunning and beautiful tree. 2-3' $35.95 60005 Cedrus atlantica -‘Glauca Pendula’ — Bluish white foliage on branches which hang from the main trunk give this cedar an attractive umbrella shape. Must be trained upright when young or it will grow close to the ground. Grows 1-2’ a year. 6-12" $24.95, 2-3' $43.95, 3-4' $54.95 60538 Cedrus atlantica -‘Horstmann’ — Grows a bit slower than ‘Glauca’ and is a very attractive baby blue color. 6-12" $24.95, 3-4' $39.95, 4-5' $49.95 Cedrus brevifolia — (-10°F, USDA Zones 6-8) This slow growing species known as the Cyprus Cedar has neat, tiny, bluish green foliage. It remains quite small in the landscape for many years but eventually can attain heights of 50 to 80 feet. It’s especially well suited for a container and/or bonsai. Native only to Cyprus, this is not a common plant. It definitely sports an alpine appearance making it suitable for a large rock garden. 60031 Cedrus brevifolia ‘Trevoron’— This is a semidwarf variety, with an open pyramidal growth habit. Slow growing. The very short needles distinguish this cultivar from the species. 1-2' $29.95 Cedrus deodara - Deodara Cedar — (-10°F, USDA Zones 6-9) The least cold-hardy of the cedars but well worth the effort if you have the right conditions. This very graceful conifer is one of the most beautiful specimens for lawn or border and for those who have the room, it makes a glorious grove when different sized trees are planted. A fast grower in youth, it slows as it matures, becoming less open. Prefers well drained, moist, deep, loamy soil but can tolerate sandy or clay soils as long as there is not standing water. Give shelter from strong, sweeping winds. Can tolerate the heat of the south (Zone 7). 4-5' $59.9560370 Cedrus deodara ‘Aurea’ — A beautiful golden needled form, which, like many yellow conifers, is more yellow in the sun. A superb, graceful tree that grows upright with cascading branches. It is very useful in the garden as a lone specimen or mixed with other conifers or broad leafed trees which provide a foil for the golden foliage. A favorite for visitors here at the nursery is a planting of this fine golden tree with the blue Cedrus atlantica ‘Glauca’. 2-3' $34.95, 3-4' $39.95 60277 Cedrus deodara ‘Cream Puff’ — This densely growing semidwarf is a treat for any garden. Its compactness makes it just right for smaller spaces. 3-4' $44.95 60757 Cedrus deodara ‘Feelin’ Blue’ — DWARF. This graceful powder blue prostrate conifer is a nice addition to the Cedrus deodaras. This would be a welcome change for a blue ground cover, that unlike juniper, will not get phytophora. Plant in full sun and in 10 years it should be about 2' high and 4' wide. 6-12" $24.95 60651 Cedrus deodara ‘Gold Mound’ — A large yellow spreading shrub. ‘Gold Mound’ will be 4’ high and 6’ across in 10 years.
