- MAIDENHAIR TREE — Transplants and establishes easily
although they can be slow growing at first. Tolerates most soil conditions but
much prefers deep, loose and sandy, moderately moist conditions, and likes full
sun.

Moore’ — This cultivar was found by Ross Moore, Moore’s Natives, Lenoir, North
Carolina who found it in a clients’ landscape. It is strongly weeping, unlike
the other ‘Pendulous’ forms in the trade that are merely horizontal at best.
They also exhibit the excellent golden-yellow fall color typical of the

Juniperus chinensis
- Chinese Juniper — (-30°F, USDA Zones 4-9) Typically this is an erect, slender,
conical tree but can sometimes be quite bushy. The bark is a nice gray-brown and
peels off in thin strips. Growth rate is slow to medium and tree forms will
eventually reach 50-60’ tall depending on the cultivar. Specific cultivars are
used as ground covers, foundation plants, sheared hedges, and screens, as well
as for specimens, mass-plantings and bonsai.

conditions.

- Flaky Juniper — (-30°F, USDA Zones 4-8) Many cultivars exist in this very
variable group. They are dwarf, generally low growing or prostrate, but
apparently some forms can be trained as a small tree. Very adaptable, tolerant
of dry soils but not suited to the moisture and heat of the Southeast.

- European or Common Larch — (-30°F, USDA Zones 3-7) The Larix is one of
the few conifers that is not evergreen; the needles first turn an enchanting
golden yellow then drop in the fall exposing the twiggy, heavily branched
structure. It forms a tall, graceful tree with a conical, though sometimes
artistically irregular top. The bark is warm gray, with vertical cracks. Larches
are glorious in groups, reminiscent of visits to the mountains in the fall where
great groves wend their way through a steep canyon.

Bogle’ — DWARF. Aa upright deciduous form of the European Larch with short,

‘Olgensis’ originates from the area near Olga Bay, NE of Vladivostock, Russia.
Therefore, it will indeed tolerate cold conditions. Sickle shaped leaves ½-¾"
drop late. Dense branches are reddish-brown.

- American Larch — (-50°F, USDA Zones 2-8) This is the most widespread Larch
across North America. It’s pretty slow growing, medium textured and will
eventually grow to 60-80’ tall. The foliage is bluish-green and turns yellow in
the autumn. Prefers moist, well drained, acid soils and does not tolerate shade
or pollution. Excellent planted in groves.

‘Varied Directions’. This most interesting hybrid developed by Dr. Sid Waxman
has been described as Larix x marschlinii by Jeff D. Bowman of the Brooklyn
Botanic Gardens in an article titled, "Plants & Garden News," Volume 16,
Number 4, Winter 2001." Branches are both spreading and arching. It will
grow wider than tall. This is a vigorous growing shrub with branches that angle
off in various directions, eventually arching down. A fine garden specimen!
Green in spring, golden in autumn and with artistically intricate branching for

- Siberian Larch — (-50°F, USDA Zones 1-5) Syn. Larix russica. This is a
conical-shaped Larch that is extremely hardy. Native to NE Europe, Siberia and
China. Rust-brown bark and bright yellow to yellowish-gray shoots, hairy when
young. The bright green leaves are narrow and have 2 white bands underneath.
Mature height ranges from 30-100’ and about 15’ wide.

- Dawn Redwood — (-30°F, USDA Zones 4-9) This beautiful, deciduous tree, known
to have been native to the Northwest through fossil records, was thought to have
been extinct world wide until a specimen was found in a Chinese temple in the
1940’s. It has a graceful conical growth habit with flattened leaves that appear
feathery and plume like. In late spring fresh new foliage appears a bright green
turning a rich golden to rusty bronze in the fall. Height in 10 years, 12-15’
but ultimate height is 100’ with a 25’ spread. This prehistoric plant attains
