Abies -
Fir — Usually very large, pyramidal, rough barked trees bearing upright
cones which disintegrate after seeds ripen; undersides of needles usually
silvery green to silvery blue. While Abies can be easy to grow, we have
found that they are not tolerant of extremely dry or extremely wet
conditions. In containers they are especially difficult, particularly during
warm weather. Planted in a well drained planting mix, they do well while the
mix is new, but after a few months, as the organic matter in the mix breaks
down, the mix becomes more dense and the same amount of water can kill the
tree. Use a soil mixture that contains a high percentage of pumice or
perlite which will not decompose. We are very careful to ship only trees
with healthy live roots; however, only a short time in the wrong soil
mixture as well as too much or too little water for more than an hour or two
can kill a young tree. For these reasons that are beyond our control, we
must modify our replacement policy to cover only the first month,
with authorized replacement at one-half price plus actual shipping cost.
