90029 To Have a Friend: An Exchange of Letters on Rhododendrons, Iris, Lilies, War and Peace 1945-51 Del and Ray James Northwest Rhododendron Pioners and C.P. Raffill, M.B.E., V.M.H. Compiled and edited by Frances Scharen Burns. 2001. The correspondence between Del and Ray James of Eugene, OR, two founders of the American Rhododendron Society, and C.P. Raffill of Surrey, England, is pure reading pleasure. At its core is the excitement of three horticulturists -- two amateurs and one professional--exchanging seeds, bulbs, plants and letters across the Atlantic. The letters are set against the dramatic historical context of a world war aftermath, and Raffitt’s personal account of the deprivations accepted by the English to restore Britain is riveting.
