ACER PALMATUM - M THROUGH R

Spring 2008

All Japanese Maples are loosely placed in one of the following groups.  The groups are defined by leaf shape, that is the preponderance  of leaves of one shape on an adult plant and in the case of the Dwarf group they are defined by the ultimate height of the plant.

AMOENUM GROUP - Leaf lobes shallowly to moderately divided up to two-thirds of the to the leaf base.

PALMATUM GROUP - Leaf lobes moderately to deeply divided, two-thirds to three-quarters of the way to the to the leaf base.

MATSUMURAE GROUP - Leaf lobes very deeply divided, more than three-quarters of the way to the leaf base.

LINEARILOBUM GROUP - Leaf lobes narrow, straplike, divided to the leaf base.

DISSECTUM GROUP - Leaf lobes very deeply divided and deeply dissected into sublobes.

DWARF GROUP - Cultivars whose mature height does not usually exceed 6'.

OTHER GROUP - Cultivars that cannot be placed in any of the above groups.

The summer leaf color will be noted after the group designation.  

NEW 51043 Acer palmatum ‘Maiko’ — 10', PALMATUM, green. Name means "Dancing Doll." Not to be confused with ‘Beni Maiko’ because of the similarity of the name. This is a small cultivar with bright green small irregular 5 lobed leaves that in fall turn to varying intensities of yellows. An upright shrub with vigorous early growth. You’ll like this one. NEW 50324 Acer palmatum ‘Margaret Bee’ — 18', PALMATUM, red. A narrow form of the red Japanese Maple. Leaves are 7-lobed, study, and dark purple. Can produce long shoots with juvenile-form foliage. 3-4' $74.95

50168 Acer palmatum ‘Masu kagami’ — 12', MATSUMURAE, variegated. Beautiful, five lobed leaves with a light green base appear as if brushed with pink and white. Amount of variegation will vary from year to year and may even be absent on some branches. But add to this beauty a light golden hue that gives the leaf a warm, glowing appearance. 50207 Acer palmatum ‘Matsukaze’ — 12', AMOENUM, green. The deeply cut, reddish 7-lobed leaves make this an especially handsome landscape plant. The spring color is spectacular, as it opens purple-red to bronze-red with bright green veins. In summer, the leaves turn brown green, later transforming rich crimson and carmine. It is a sturdy, vigorously growing cultivar. Spreading in habit, it needs space to develop its unusual weeping appearance. #1 $49.95

50358 Acer palmatum ‘Matsuyoi’ — 12', ANOENUM, green. Syn. ‘Myoi’. This medium sized tree has unusual foliage. The leaves emerge as a pale yellowish green, turning to a light, bright green as they mature. Fall coloration is bright yellow orange to deep orange. The leaves are rather large, measuring up to 10 cm long and wide. The foliage appearance is somewhat feathery. This tree tends to grow broad and not strongly upright. 1-2' $29.95

50286 Acer palmatum ‘Mikawa yatsubusa’ — 3', DWARF, green. A rare and beautiful dwarf Japanese maple. Densely branched and layered with 5-lobed, green leaves. NEW 51042 Acer palmatum ‘Mimaye’— 5’. DWARF, green. Small, recurved leaves that look like small parachutes in lime-green on a fast growing, but compact layered plant. #1 $24.95

NEW 50227 Acer palmatum ‘Mizu kuguri’ — 12', PALMATUM, green. Unusual spring coloring graces this cultivar. The underside of the leaves is light green but the shading is pinkish-rose to a light brick-red color, changing to deep green in late summer. Leaves are 7-lobed and regular in shape with fine, sharp toothed margins. A bushy plant rather than a tall tree form. 1-2' $39.95

50328 Acer palmatum ‘Momenshide’ — 12', OTHER, green. The leaves are feathery like ‘Hagoromo’ but slightly less serrated reminding one of tapestry. Reddish in spring, turning deep green in summer and bright yellow in fall. The twiggyness of this cultivar make it adapt well to pruning and shaping. #1 $24.95, 3-4' $74.95

50135 Acer palmatum ‘Moonfire’ — 24', PALMATUM, red. This deep blood-red maple is similar to ‘Bloodgood’ and is an excellent addition to the palmatum group. The leaves are beautiful wine red to purple and hold their color well. Fall color is crimson red. A newer cultivar not yet in most collections. #1 $24.95, 4-5' $119.95, 5-6' $139.95

NEW 50409 Acer palmatum ‘Murasaki hime’ — 6', DWARF, red. This diminutive purple tree has deeply lobed leaves similar in shape to ‘Burgundy Lace’ with as much if not more serration on the edges. In shade this plant is more red than purple, red to yellow fall color is also muted in shade. Appears to be less vigorous and perhaps more tender to inclement conditions. Sometimes cultivar ‘Murasaki kiyohime’ is sold incorrectly under this name. Unusual and hard to come by. 2-3' $45.95

50208 Acer palmatum ‘Murasaki kiyohime’ — 6', DWARF, green. A dwarf cultivar, this plant is not widely known and should be grown more. The deeply divided leaves are light yellow-green, edged with striking bright red-purple. Little by little, the leaves become solid green in summer. When autumn arrives, the foliage becomes gold and orange. It is a multiple branched, twiggy grower, and is an excellent plant for the alpine garden, bonsai culture or patio container. 50209 Acer palmatum ‘Mure hibari’ — 18', MATSUMURE, green. Deeply divided and prominently toothed leaves have seven lobes. The basic leaf color is a dark green with margins of the new leaves often tinted a glowing brick-red. When fall arrives, they turn to a blend of yellow to crimson. Very open and sparse branching, this one is rare in cultivation. 4-5' $49.95, 6-7' $139.95

NEW 51052 Acer palmatum ‘Muro gawa’ — 20', AMOENUM, red. This is a hardy, vigorous cultivar that will bring lots of color and style into the landscape. The show starts in spring with various shades of orange-red with contrasting green veins. As leaves mature, they turn to rust with green overtones, then finally to a deep bronzy green. Then, in the fall, the oranges, reds and crimsons return for yet another show of color. ‘Muro gawa’ matures to a round-topped tree, 10 to 13’ wide, with somewhat pendulous outer branches. #1 $32.95

50179 Acer palmatum ‘Musashino’ — 36', MATSUMURAE, red. A hardy and very old cultivar with rich, deep purple-red color. It holds its color way into the end of summer, and fall frosts give a beautiful crimson hue to the purple foliage. Strongly upright grower with a rounded crown at maturity. 5-6' $129.95

50283 Acer palmatum ‘Nicholsonii’ — 24'. MATSUMURAE, green. The seasonal color change is what makes this cultivar special. The foliage begins light green and deepens during sumer and then in fall it turns a wonderful glowing crimson orange. This was first described in 1893 and is still a sought after cultivar. 2-3' $59.95, 3-4' $75.95

50145 Acer palmatum ‘Nishiki gawa’ - Pine Bark Maple — 18', PALMATUM, green. This cultivar features coarse, knobby textured bark, often likened to that of the Japanese Black Pine. The rough bark is more pronounced in ‘Nishiki gawa’ than in other cultivars featured for this trait. Leaves are small and bright green, with a red margin early in the year. Fall color is red. Often used for bonsai. 1-2' $35.95

50210 Acer palmatum ‘Nishiki momiji’ — 18', PALMATUM, green. A smaller leafed maple known to develop bright rich fall colors. The early spring leaves open shades of pink or orange-red. The color stays along the margins as the leaves mature and turn light green. In the fall, it changes to an exceedingly brilliant display of fiery red. It makes an upright growing tree with a spreading crown at maturity. 5-6' $139.95

NEW 51054 Acer palmatum ‘Nomura nishiki’ — 15', MATSUMURAE, red. Spring leaves come out red with a tinge of green and then turn bronze green in summer. It is the fall when they really dress up, with a wonderful bright orange and red. Truely beautiful. #1 $32.95

50165 Acer palmatum ‘Nuresagi’ — 18', MATSUMURAE, red. The black-purple, 7-lobed leaves are cut almost to the petioles, appearing as slender, pointed fingers. Toward fall, they maintain their purplish color but the red veining becomes stronger. Vigorous and upright growing, it needs room to develop and show the strong branching structure. 50259 Acer palmatum ‘O kagami’ — 18', PALMATUM, red. This cultivar makes a wonderful addition to the landscape. Densely branching and vase shaped, the splendid burgundy-red of the new foliage changes into glossy blackish-red as the leaves develop. This color lasts until late summer, when shades of dark green blend in. Fall brings on an array of several shades of red and scarlet. A very desirable, upright tree. 5-6 $139.95

NEW 51004 Acer palmatum ‘Octopus’ — 6-15', DISSECTUM, red. With a name like ‘Octopus’, this cultivar must have many deeply divided lobes to each leaf, and of course it does. The fingers of each leaf are red and it covers itself with a mound of red beauty. A strong, irregular growing variety with red foliage turning brilliant fire engine red in the fall. New shoots can be quite long, giving it it’s characteristic "octopus" effect. 1-2' $39.95

50133 Acer palmatum ‘Ogon sarasa’ — 18', MATSUMURAE, red. As early leaves unfold on this tree, they are deep green brushed with red. Veins are in sharp contrast to the darker leaf color. Later in summer, leaves turn solid green. Fall colors are delightful, with many shades of orange and crimson. Each leaf has seven lobes that are deeply cut. NEW 51018 Acer palmatum ‘Ojishi’ — 6', DWARF, green. This very dwarf rare little shrub is a much more compact version of ‘Shishigashira’ with close set wavy small leaves. It will grow 1-2'' a year. Same great green as ‘Shishigashira’. A winner for sure! 2-3' $45.95

50048 Acer palmatum ‘Okushimo’ — 24', PALMATUM, green. Small leaves are sharply pointed at each lobe tip. An unusual effect is created by upward curling leaf edges. ‘Okushimo’ is an upright growing, vase shaped tree. It is vigorous, and young trees can grow as much as 3' per season. Leaves turn fluorescent gold in autumn. #1 $19.95

50154 Acer palmatum ‘Omato’ — 26', AMOENUM, green. This is a large leaved Japanese maple, similar to ‘Osakazuki’, with bright green leaves and a nicely rounded structure; almost as wide as it is tall. Leaves have five to seven lobes and are 2 to 3" long and 3 to 4" wide. In spring, the leaves emerge with a tinge of orange-red and turn again in the fall to brilliant tones of red. 50049 Acer palmatum ‘Omure yama’ — 18', MATSUMURAE, green. One of the best green forms of palmatum, this is a small tree with a pendulous habit. The lobes are long and deeply cut. 50290 Acer palmatum ‘Orange Dream’ — 12', PALMATUM, green. An upright shrub type maple that can reach up to 25' in height at maturity. Well branched, slender with green bark. 50212 Acer palmatum ‘Orangeola’ — 5-8', DISSECTUM, red. One of the better introductions to the group of maples with deeply cut leaves and weeping habit, this one has a glorious orange color. Spring growth is orange-red, and summer leaves maintain a wash of orange coloration over rich green. As an added bonus, there is a good second growth in midsummer, which again shows the orange new foliage. The two toned summer color gives way to spectacular bright orange-red in fall. 50050 Acer palmatum ‘Oregon Sunset’ — 18', MATSUMURAE, red. Its short, bushy habit makes this maple a splendid container plant. Foliage is interesting with leaves bunched at the end of each shoot. 50051 Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ — 36', AMOENUM, green. This cultivar has the largest leaves of all the palmatums, the better to show its famous display of fall color! If this tree displayed this show only one day a year, it would be well worth a garden spot. You could, however, be treated to the glorious colors over a long time, depending on the weather. NEW 51044 Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki Aureum’ — 36', AMOENUM, green. Same as ‘Osakazuki’ in growth habit, form and summer leaf color, however the spring growth is a nice, bright yellow. The fall show will be just as beautiful, this just adds one more dimension to an already beautiful tree. #1 $32.95

NEW 51045 Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki Rubrum’ — 24', AMOENUM, green. Another sibling of the famous ‘Osakazuki’, this one extends the season of color by emerging a pretty pink-red. #1 $32.95

50052 Acer palmatum ‘Oshio beni’ — 30', AMOENUM, red. A desirable form, its foliage color is outstanding. While other red leafed varieties are blood-red, ‘Oshio-beni’ is orange-red! 50291 Acer palmatum ‘Oshu shidare’ — 18', MATSUMURAE, red. At maturity this tree will be more than 10' wide with cascading branches that touch the ground. The leaves are deeply cut, nearly to the center, dark purple in spring to bronzy-purple in summer with green undertones, changing finally to red in the fall. NEW 50174 Acer palmatum ‘Otohime’ — 3', DWARF, green. This is a vigorous and desirable little dwarf that has a nice dense, flat-topped habit that lends itself quite well to bonsai culture. The leaves are small, 1 to 2" wide and long, with the typical five lobed palmate form. They emerge a bright yellow-green in the spring with red edging and tips, which persist all through the summer. NEW 50053 Acer palmatum ‘Palmatifidum’ — 6-12', DISSECTUM, green. Syn. ‘Dissectum Paucum’ and ‘Washi-no-o’. An outstanding cultivar of green lace leaf. It differs from the standard in that the lobes are not as deeply cut at the edges. This gives the leaf a sturdier appearance that is equally as beautiful. This introduction from Duncan and Davies in New Zealand by Graham Roberts is vigorous and has the weeping habit typical of dissectum varieties. Eventual height depends on how high you stake this beautiful weeper. The leaves are deeper purple-red than ‘Crimson Queen’ or ‘Everred’, and hold their color well, turning crimson in the fall. 50054 Acer palmatum ‘Red Pygmy’ — 6', LINEARILOBUM , red. Introduced in Holland, this cultivar of the linearlobum group won an Award of Merit in 1969. Leaves are composed of very narrow strap like lobes. Old plants broaden in shape on this densely branched cultivar. Summer color is green red, with a wonderful golden color in the fall. NEW 51035 Acer palmatum ‘Red Spider Web’— 8’, DISSECTUM, red. Not to be confused with ‘Red Spider’ which in a linearilobum. This cultivar makes a fine textured, refined leaved, color holding mound that glows in the fall. #1 $75.95

NEW 50960 Acer palmatum ‘Red Star’ — 15', PALMATUM, red. The leaves are like a 5 pointed star and in the fall they turn yellow to solid orange-red with yellow veins! 4-5' $79.95

NEW 51024 Acer palmatum ‘Rilas’ Red’ — 7', DISSECTUM, red. Very finely dissected foliage that is purple-crimson in spring and darkening in summer, then finishing in fall with an orange red. We are always glad to have a red dissectum that holds its color well in the summer! 2-3' $74.95

NEW 51029 Acer palmatum ‘Riley’— ?, MATSUMURAE, red. The small brick red to purple small leaves do not fade in the sun. Named for the grand daughter of Horst and Linda Jeddeloh of Jeddeloh Farms in Gresham, Or. You’ll like this one. #1 $32.95

50386 Acer palmatum ‘Royale’ — 5', DWARF, red. A new maple forms a small red ball . It was from a witches’ broom found in Pennsylvania. As with many of the red cultivars, it has crimson fall color. 2-3' $39.95

NEW 51032 Acer palmatum ‘Ruby Ridge’ — ?, MATSUMURAE, red. Large leaves with very pointed 1'' lobes cut back to the petiole of a rich dark purple color. Very different look on this strong, short plant. #1 $24.95

NEW 50387 Acer palmatum ‘Rugose’ — 12-18', MATSUMURAE, green. A selection that only a collector could love, or, for those of you who want something not only interesting but unique in the landscape. It has truly rugose leaves (full of wrinkles). The veins and shoots range from red-purple to almost black, showing off the foliage texture. The leaves themselves range in shape and size and direction, somewhat like a misbehaving child. It tends to be shrubby and does well in containers. Those who have the courage to purchase ‘Rugose’ will have perhaps the most beautiful array of plum to crimson found on any Japanese maple when fall arrives. Very rarely offered. 4-5' $79.95

NEW 51007 Acer palmatum ‘Russlyn In The Pink’ — 4', MATSUMURAE, red. This is a new selection from Crispin’s Creations Nursery. Rich red new foliage that bronzes in later summer then the second growth or red foliage is striking against the older leaves. In autumn it’s a rich crimson. Showy. 2-3' $45.95

50980 Acer palmatum ‘Ruth’s Red’ — 18', PALMATUM, red. A seedling selection most likely of ‘Bloodgood’, ‘Ruth’s Red’ comes originally from Pennsylvania. Our grower says it "is the darkest red upright Maples that I have ever seen... one of those plants that people notice from 40' away. She has seven lobed leaves up to 5'' in size, finely serrated at the margins. No color fade throughout summer, then leaves are flaming crimson in fall. 3-4' $74.95

50182 Acer palmatum ‘Ryuzu’ — 6', DWARF, green. A delightful dwarf suitable for bonsai as well as for planting in the rock garden. It has very small palmate type leaves that have faint shades of pink on the new foliage, gradually turning green. The edges of the leaves are serrated, and the tip of these serrations is often brick-red. The leaf nodes are closely spaced. Makes a heavily branched plant. 1-2' $35.95, 4-5' $75.95
