ACER PALMATUM - A THROUGH F

JUNE 2012

All Japanese Maples are loosely placed in one of the following groups.  The groups are defined by leaf shape, that is the preponderance of leaves of one shape on an adult plant and in the case of the Dwarf group they are defined by the ultimate height of the plant.

AMOENUM GROUP - Leaf lobes shallowly to moderately divided up to two-thirds of the to the leaf base.

PALMATUM GROUP - Leaf lobes moderately to deeply divided, two-thirds to three-quarters of the way to the to the leaf base.

MATSUMURAE GROUP - Leaf lobes very deeply divided, more than three-quarters of the way to the leaf base.

LINEARILOBUM GROUP - Leaf lobes narrow, strap-like, divided to the leaf base.

DISSECTUM GROUP - Leaf lobes very deeply divided and deeply dissected into sub-lobes.

DWARF GROUP - Cultivars whose mature height does not usually exceed 6'.

OTHER GROUP - Cultivars that cannot be placed in any of the above groups.

The summer leaf color will be noted after the group designation.

ACER PALMATUM & CULTIVARS

Not enough can be said about the value of the Japanese Maple to modern landscape design. As we move towards smaller gardens and become more refined and discriminating in our choice of plants, it is only natural to "discover" the centuries old mainstay of the oriental garden. Beautiful in so many ways, and in so many seasons! Acer palmatum and its cultivars are hardy to -20°F, (USDA Zone 5). They perform fully and with ease through Zone 8. For Zones 9 and above, you may not experience the dramatic fall foliage coloration, but with proper cultivation and care, the trees can be grown with great success still providing their character to your landscape. Please note: In areas with prolonged hot spells, some afternoon shade is advisable.

51077 Acer palmatum ‘Amber Ghost’ — 8’, PALMATUM, variegated. A vigorous entry in the "Ghost" series with larger leaves than most. The apricot-amber blush in the new foliage gives it it’s name. 50024 Acer palmatum ‘Aoyagi’ — 16-22’. PALMATUM, green. Syn. ‘Ukon.’ If you like the fresh green of a mountain meadow, this cultivar is for you. The leaves are typical palmatum type and are luscious green. The real bonus is the green stems of ‘Aoyagi’ are as green as the foliage. Plant this with red stemmed ‘Sango Kaku,’ and you will have a sight to behold. In the winter, when all else is dreary, the show of the red and green is outstanding. 1-2’ $29.95, 3-4’ $59.95

50028 Acer palmatum ‘Azuma murasaki’ — 12-18’, MATSUMURAE, red. The handsome hues of this maple contrast well with other red-leaved forms. There is a slight purple cast to the red, with an undertone of green showing through. Midsummer, the leaves become deep green with a reddish tone. Rapid early growth, developing into a round topped form. Outside limbs appear to have a cascading shape with maturity on this sparsely branched, shrubby tree. 3-4’ $69.95, 4-5’ $89.95

50128 Acer palmatum ‘Beni hime’ — 3’, DWARF, red. One of the smallest forms of A. palmatum, this is a wonderful and rare cultivar. The fingernail-sized red foliage makes the plant especially good for bonsai, and the tree makes an unusual item in the garden. Most maples have large foliage displays that can only be made small with trimming. This is a cultivar that stays tight in growth habit, yet it can be very vigorous, making an excellent specimen plant quickly. It’s a great container plant or a focal point in a garden of miniatures! 1-2’ $49.95, 2-3’ $79.95

50111 Acer palmatum ‘Beni hoshi’ — 3-6’, DWARF, green. We are told that this new introduction is absolutely perfect for container and bonsai growing. The leaves divided into 7-9 deep lobes emerge orange-red to purplish-red in the spring. The amount of red is affected by the amount of shade the tree receives. In deep shade leaves will have green overtones. A vigorous grower when young, it might need trimming to keep it checked if a tighter structure is desired as it matures. 4-5’ $79.95

50203 Acer palmatum ‘Beni kawa’ — 9-12’, PALMATUM, green. "Sensational" describes this terrific maple! The new bark is coral to salmon-red adding interest to the winter landscape. This artistic cultivar is full and twiggy, and with its bright branches, will be seen from a great distance, allowing this tree to be effectively used to draw the eye to a desired area. Summer dresses the tree in dense foliage of true green, sometimes lightly edged with red tints. Along with this, the bark changes to a yellowish color. 3-4’ $69.95

50131 Acer palmatum ‘Beni komachi’ — 6-9’, MATSUMURAE, red. The leaves are quite unusual on this brilliantly colored dwarf. Each curly, 5-lobed leaf is separated entirely to the center. New foliage quickly turns intense bright crimson. As the leaf matures, the color darkens and older foliage is greenish-red. The margins remain edged in crimson, which is delicately woven along the toothed rim, giving the appearance of a lace work border. Beautiful! Fall colors are scarlet. Rare in cultivation. 2-3’ $49.95

50113 Acer palmatum ‘Beni kumo-no-su’ — 5-8’, DISSECTUM, red. This new introduction is similar to ‘Red Filigree Lace’, both having a very similar leaf form and cut. However, this cultivar, after opening red in the spring, changes to a reddish- bronze in the summer and a fiery crimson in the fall. We are told that this variety may be stronger and more vigorous than ‘Red Filigree Lace’. #1 $39.95. 1-2’ $49.95

50258 Acer palmatum ‘Beni otake’ — 24’, LINEARILOBUM, red. An outstanding newer form of A. palmatum. It is an attractive, upright-grower, with a bamboo-like appearance. For grace and beauty in your landscape, this purple-red, narrow-leaved cultivar is perfect. Suitable for small gardens. 1-2’ $49.95, 3-4’ $59.95, 6-7’ $139.95

A slender, densely branched, willowy, small tree. 2-3’ $39.95, 3-4’ $59.95, 4-5’ $89.95

50169 Acer palmatum ‘Beni ubi gohon’ — 10’, LINEARLOBUM, red. The linearlobum group of maples is distinguished by the long, narrow leaf lobes which are often cut completely to the base of the leaf. Green forms are likened to bamboo in their light, delicate appearance. This unique form with red leaves becomes a small, shrubby bamboo look-alike for landscape or container. 2-3’ $55.95, 3-4’ $69.95, 4-5’ $89.95

50393 Acer palmatum ‘Berrima Bridge’ — 8-16’. DISSECTUM, green. So many leaves on Japanese maples fade from their showy spring colors, but this one emerges green and then takes on soft shades of coppery green to deep bronze for the summer, very unusual for a dissectum. In fall the colors slowly deepen until they become an intense red. A seedling selected from a nursery of the same name in New South Wales Australia. 2-3’ $69.95

50029 Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ — 30’, PALMATUM, red. The deepest red leaf color of the palmatum type cultivars envelops this upright, vigorous tree, presenting a display second to none. ‘Bloodgood’ is especially fine in holding its color into late summer when so many of the others turn green. Fall color is burnt-crimson. 1-2’ $69.95

51111 Acer palmatum ‘Briella’s Broom’ — A brand new release from New England. Strong growing broom with dark red spring and summer foliage. Fall color is crimson. A bit stronger grower than ‘Shaina’. 50248 Acer palmatum ‘Brocade’ — 8-10’, DISSECTUM, red. The distinctions between one red dissectum and the next are difficult to verbally convey. Here goes, leaves of this variety are finely dissected like ‘Ornatum’. Unlike many of the reds that try to out do each other to the black end of the spectrum, ‘Brocade’ is a brighter red and holds this color nearly through summer, at which point it deepens to a pleasant bronze color. In fall this variety turns brilliant red crimsons and oranges. In maturity these specimens will be wider than tall. 1-2’ $44.95, 2-3’ $69.95

The broad, seven-lobed leaves are serrate and color well with some sun. Summer foliage mellows to a bronzy green and fall promises colors of bright crimson. Its slow growth insures a strong, picturesque cultivar that won’t outgrow its space. Often used in containers and for bonsai. 3-4’ $49.95

It emerges in spring with bright coral-pink foliage that becomes pale yellow with a pink edge and then turns light green with gray-green mottled variegation in early summer. 50035 Acer palmatum ‘Dissectum Nigrum’ — 7-10’, DISSECTUM, red. Syn. ‘Everred’ dissectum. The outstanding feature of this laceleaf maple is the silvery down that covers the new leaves as they unfold in spring. Once out, leaves exhibit deep red shades that hold well into summer, giving ‘Everred’ its name. This popular form grows into a beautiful, weeping mound, the outstanding habit for which Japanese maples are famous. Excellent for use as a container plant. #1 $19.95, 2-3’ $59.95

50414 Acer palmatum ‘Dr. Seuss’ — 8’, PALMATUM, green. There goes my favorite descriptor for A. p. ‘Shishigashira’! This plant is really nothing like ‘Shishigashira,’ however it is equally unusual. The foliage is small, alternatively flat, scrunched, or sickle shaped. Elongated, deeply cut lobes on some leaves and more normal foliage the next petiole over gives this plant a slightly disheveled look. Of great interest, this is a plant worthy of your attention and garden space! 2-3’ $45.95, 3-4’ $59.95

50362 Acer palmatum ’Eagle’s Claw’ — 5-9’, DISSECTUM, green. This small, shrubby, slow growing tree has deeply dissected leaves that curve down on the ends reminiscent of an eagle’s claw. Fall color is a vibrant yellow. This tree would be especially well suited for bonsai culture. 2-3’ $49.95

The 7 lobes of the leaves are separated entirely to the center, widely spaced, and distinctly serrated. Fall color is a brilliant orange tinted with red. 3-4’ $49.95, 4-5’ $79.95

50974 Acer palmatum ‘Elizabeth’ — 6’, DWARF, red. Habit like Acer campestre this cultivar will grow into a dense upright shrub. The ‘Burgundy Lace’ red foliage clothing the branches starts out bright pink-red changing to a purple-red as it matures. The color contrast on a branch is just eye catching! Holds its color nicely right up to the fall when it becomes vivid red. 2-3’ $44.95, 4-5’ $114.95

50293 Acer palmatum ‘Emperor I’ — 24’, PALMATUM, red. An exceptional cultivar that is a must for those needing a tough Japanese Maple. Very similar to the old favorite, ‘Bloodgood,’ except that it leafs out in the spring about two weeks later, making it an excellent tree in areas with a late frost. The very dark red leaf lasts throughout the season; in fall the leaves turn a fiery crimson. 3-4’ $55.95

50943 Acer palmatum ‘Englishtown’ — 6’, DWARF, red. Gregory says this plant is "like a cross between ‘Pixie’ and ‘Shaina’ but differs in it’s fastigiate growth." What more could one want. 2-3’ $49.95

50940 Acer palmatum ‘Enkan’ — 8-10’, LINEARILOBUM, red. Similar in habit to ‘Ko to no ito’. That alone would make me want this plant! It also is the darkest red throughout the growing season of any of the linear type maples and turns orange in the fall. I can’t think of anything more I would want in a Japanese maple. 2-3’ $49.95

50998 Acer palmatum ‘Ever Autumn’ — 6-12’, PALMATUM, green. This is another cultivar that was a chance seedling that caught the discerning eye of Don Heims of Terra Nova Nursery. 50302 Acer palmatum ‘Fascination’ — 16’, MATSUMURAE, green. Upright and rounded growth habit, and the broadest of dark green leaves, almost like A. japonicum ‘Aconitifolium.’ These very green, seven-lobed leaves are edged with large narrow teeth. The bark too has something to offer: green with some white striations. Fall color is orange. 3-4’ $59.95

50036 Acer palmatum ‘Filigree’ — 5-10’, DISSECTUM, green. This is an outstanding dissected maple. Light, yellow-green leaves of extremely delicate texture are flecked with minute speckles of cream and pale gold. Like most dissectums, the growth is pendulous. Densely branched and easy to grow. 1-2’ $39.95, 2-3’ $49.95

50948 Acer palmatum ‘Fireball’ — 5’, DWARAF, red. This cultivar has small, five-lobed leaves that are deeply divided. It came from a witches’-broom found by David Verkade of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. A nice plant for any collection. #1 $19.95

50045 Acer palmatum ‘First Ghost’ — 13’, matsumure, variegated. This is a sport of ‘Beni shigitatsu sawa’ with the same deeply cut leaf lobes and the wavy margins. Pale cream ground with dark green veins and pink tinged edges give the foliage a truly ghostly appearance. Give a shady location. 1-2’ $29.95, 2-3’ $32.95

50368 Acer palmatum ‘Fjellheim’ — 3-5’, PALMATUM, green. This spectacular dwarf keeps the bright red stems and leaf characteristics of its parent, ‘Sango Kaku,’ but it forms a much more compact and upright plant. A good choice where a mass of coral stems will brighten the winter scene. Will do well in a container. 1-2’ $39.95, 2-3’ $79.95

50100 Acer palmatum ‘Flavescens’ — 5-10’, DISSECTUM, green. A beautiful yellow-green lace leaf cultivar. As summer progresses, the leaves darken. Fall leaves turn yellow, sometimes tinged with orange. The pendulous habit will produce a cascading form that can reach 9’ in width. 2-3’ $39.95

51113 Acer palmatum ‘Fugiyama’ — 10-12’, AMOENUM, green. The very rich deep green, perfectly shaped leaves each have their own space to show off at their best. Add to that, they do not burn easily. The fall oranges and yellows will lure you from across the garden. 1-2’ $39.95

51163 Acer palmatum ‘Fukin agashi’ — 5’, DWARF, green. This is a particularly fine dwarf linearilobum that should be very popular for that special "show off" place in the garden. Its feathery green narrow lobed leaves give this plant a graceful aspect. 2-3’ $79.95
