Acer New Arrivals (Not in Catalog) 2009

50149 Acer japonicum ‘Aka Omote’ — Rare, mid-sized tree with red-purple leaves that turn bronze-green in summer and then brunt-red in fall. An unusual color for a japonicum. #1 $39.95

50322 Acer palmatum ‘Aka kawa hime’ — 7-10', PALMATUM, green. A dwarf ‘Sango Kaku’, having bright green leaves in the summer that turn golden in the fall with the coral bark. Perfect for small gardens. #1 $34.95, 1-2' $39.95

50378 Acer palmatum ‘Ao shime-no-uchi shidare’ — 7-10', LINEARILOBUM, green. This is a deep green variety that turns yellow to deep gold in fall. Unlike other linearilobums this plant has arching branches giving it a nice rounded habit. 4-5' $99.95

50113 Acer palmatum ‘Beni kumo-no-su’ — 5-8', DISSECTUM, red. This new introduction is similar to ‘Red Filigree Lace’, both having a very similar leaf form and cut. However, this cultivar, after opening red in the spring, changes to a reddish- bronze in the summer and a fiery crimson in the fall. We are told that this variety may be stronger and more vigorous than ‘Red Filigree Lace’. 2-3' $119.95

50414 Acer palmatum ‘Dr. Seuss’ — 8', PALMATUM, green. There goes my favorite descriptor for A. p. ‘Shishigashira’! This plant is really nothing like ‘Shishigashira,’ however it is equally unusual. The foliage is small, alternatively flat, scrunched, or sickle shaped. Elongated, deeply cut lobes on some leaves and more normal foliage the next petiole over gives this plant a slightly disheveled look. Of great interest, this is a plant worthy of your attention and gardenspace! #1 $49.95

51037 Acer palmatum ‘Fairy Hair’— 3’, DWARF, green. This plant grows less than 1" per year. Very fine thin segmented threadlike leaves. A well named unique maple introduced by Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon. #1 $79.95

50100 Acer palmatum ‘Flavescens’ — 5-10', DISSECTUM, green. A beautiful yellow-green lace leaf cultivar. As summer progresses, the leaves darken. Fall leaves turn yellow, sometimes tinged with orange. The pendulous habit will produce a cascading form that can reach 9' in width. 1-2' $39.95
51038 Acer palmatum ‘Hatsu Shigare’— 5’, DISSECTUM, red. The lacy leaves are similar to ‘Garnet’, but the new foliage is a vivid red becoming dark purple flushed with green. 1-2' $49.95

50085 Acer palmatum ‘In the PInk’ — 10'?, PALMATUM, red. A new cultivar that comes out in spring with pink new foliage and turns a green-red in summer. Slow growing. 2-3' $69.95

50243 Acer palmatum ‘Mai mori’ — 15', PALMATUM, variegated. Originating in Japan with exact origin is unknown. A densely branched dwarf, it will be as wide as it is tall. The 5-lobed leaves are purplish-green with lighter green, pink or even white variegation. Will revert, so make sure you trim back those branches that do. 5-6' $169.95

50287 Acer palmatum ‘Mirte’ — 24', PALMATUM, green. The dark olive-green leaves are overlaid with a glossy chocolate in spring are darker in the summer and have purplish tints in the fall before they turn a nice yellow blushed with orange. Openly branching, the leaves are a deep chocolate color in the spring.
1-2' $34.95, 2-3' $44.95

50145 Acer palmatum ‘Nishiki gawa’ - Pine Bark Maple — 18', PALMATUM, green. This cultivar features coarse, knobby textured bark, often likened to that of the Japanese Black Pine. The rough bark is more pronounced in ‘Nishiki gawa’ than in other cultivars featured for this trait. Leaves are small and bright green, with a red margin early in the year. Fall color is red. Often used for bonsai. 2-3' $44.95

50047 Acer palmatum ‘Olsen's Frosted Strawberry’ 2-3' $109.95

51032 Acer palmatum ‘Ruby Ridge’— ?, MATSUMURAE, red. Large leaves with very pointed 1" lobes cut back to the petiole of a rich dark purple color with green veins. Very different look on this strong, short plant. #1 $24.95

50387 Acer palmatum ‘Rugose’ — 12-18', MATSUMURAE, green. A selection that only a collector could love, or, for those of you who want something not only interesting but unique in the landscape. It has truly rugose leaves (full of wrinkles). The veins and shoots range from red-purple to almost black, showing off the foliage texture. The leaves themselves range in shape and size and direction, somewhat like a misbehaving child. It tends to be shrubby and does well in containers. Those who have the courage to purchase ‘Rugose’ will have perhaps the most beautiful array of plum to crimson found on any Japanese maple when fall arrives. Very rarely offered. 4-5' $99.95

50951 Acer palmatum ‘Tromley’s Red Sentinel’ — 4', DWARF, red. The only columnar Japanese maple that we know. The spring foliage is brilliant red lasting through the summer and turning to crimson in the fall. This is a perfect tree for small narrow settings.
#1 $49.95

50216 Acer palmatum ‘Tsuchigumo’‘ — 6-12', PALMATUM, green. New growth rust red changing to green. Fall color is bright gold, with crimson edging. Its small leaves and stature give this a special place in the genus. 6-7' $159.95

51012 Acer palmatum ‘Ukon’ — 8', PALMATUM, green. Gregory says this is ‘Aoyagi’, however the description our grower gives is more like the ‘Ukon’ Vertrees described in his book: "quite yellow new foliage that turns bright green with very indistinct yellowish mottling that becomes darker in late Summer and then in fall changes to deep yellow and gold with red tones blended into some leaves." The leaves do indeed look a lot like ‘Aoyagi’, but the structure is not even close. Our plants are too young to make adequate comparisons, but we think this is the plant Vertrees was describing. 3-4' $45.95

50345 Acer palmatum ‘Winter Flame’ — 5-10', MATSUMURAE, green. Another spectacular dwarf form of the beloved ‘Sango kaku’. This one tends to be a little more red, similar to the ‘Beni kawa’. 1-2' $34.95
